21 year old woman sworn in as Sheboygan’s newest police officer

Carolina Contreras became a mother at age 17, while she was in her senior year in high school, and she enrolled in PAT when her baby boy was about 2 months old. She graduated from high school with her class when her baby was about 7 months old. She stayed in the program until her child turned 3, and about 6 months later, she graduated from LTC. Throughout the three years, she and her little boy met twice a month with her Parent Educator for home visits.

When we asked what she liked best about being part of PAT, she said, “I loved learning about the new things/skills that my little boy would do or eventually do. I also loved the activities/projects that we did, because it helped me to come up with ideas of activities to do with him.”

A 21 year old has been sworn in as Sheboygan’s newest police officer.

Carolina Contreras, a Sheboygan native, was sworn in during a ceremony Monday at the police department. She is a graduate of Sheboygan South High School. Last year, Contreras graduated from Lakeshore Technical College with an associate degree in Criminal Justice. During her time in college, she served as a volunteer in the Volunteers in Police Service program at the Sheboygan Police Department.

Prior to being hired as a police officer in Sheboygan, Contreras was a correctional officer at Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution in western Sheboygan County. She is currently the youngest sworn officer of the Sheboygan Police Department but is not the youngest officer hired in the police department’s history according to Paula Haelfrisch, the department’s Administrative Assistant.

Haelfrisch said Contreras speaks Spanish, which in law enforcement is a valuable asset as Hispanics account for nearly 10% of the population in Sheboygan.

Contreras turns 22 years old in May but she joins a growing list of young law enforcement officers in Sheboygan County. In February 2017, Noah Wetenkamp and Eric Brushert, both 20 years old, joined the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office. Wetenkamp is a graduate of Sheboygan Lutheran High School and LTC and Brushert is a graduate of Wausau East High School and Northcentral Technical College. In 2015, then-24 year old Amy Gross joined the Sheriff’s Office.
